Guidance on Open Houses
According to a recent communication from CAR:
Many REALTORS® are wondering what to do about open houses, which by nature go against the tenets of social distancing. Some agents are reporting success with increased virtual showings, while others (about 25 percent of those surveyed by NAR this past week) are requiring buyers to use hand sanitizer before entering the home. Some sellers are asking to cancel open houses altogether, not wanting potentially infected strangers to touch objects in their homes. If you are planning to continue holding open houses, there are basic safety precautions you can take, like regularly cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces (like doorknobs) and covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the inside of your elbow.
I wanted to take a few moments of your time to update you on COVID-19, commonly referred to as the coronavirus, and its potential impacts on the association and the real estate industry. The situation is rapidly evolving, with new information being issued from state and national governments daily.
On March 16th, Marin REALTORS® association support will temporarily transition to exclusively offering online and phone support. Association staff will be working remotely as part of our precautions to limit the spread of the coronavirus, and to help keep our staff healthy. You can handle association-related business by emailing: or by calling 415.507.1000. Nearly every aspect of your account, and your Supra Keys, can be updated or changed without having to come into the office.
  • The Marin REALTORS® office in San Rafael will be closed from March 16 - March 20th as a health and safety precaution. This closure may be extended if deemed necessary per CDC, state and local guidance.
  • has many resources to help you conduct your business during this time, including links to N.A.R. and C.A.R. guidance on coronavirus.
  • Association staff will be available during normal business hours: Monday-Friday from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm. This is being done to help you perform membership related tasks as close to 'business as usual' under the circumstances. We hope to be able to resume normal, full operations as quickly as possible once the situation permits.
  • For continuing updates, please monitor and our association Facebook page.
If you are feeling sick or have been in close contact with someone who is sick, we urge you to handle association business remotely, either by emailing, calling 415.507.1000 or visiting Please call the office before deciding to come in as most business can be handled over the phone or email.
We also recommend you take the following precautions in your business and keep your clients updated about any potential impact the coronavirus may have on showings, open houses, etc:
  • Staying home if you have a fever, cough, shortness of breath or any other cold or flu-like symptom.
  • Washing your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water aren't available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoiding close contact with anyone who is sick.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, or cough or sneeze into your sleeve.
These resources include guidance on how to properly interact with clients or others exhibiting signs or respiratory illness while avoiding fair housing issues. How to communicate with your clients about the coronavirus about open houses. The guidance from NAR and CAR suggests speaking openly and honestly with your seller about the pros and cons of holding an open house. You or your office might have a policy of communicating any concerns in writing. You can find them here:
